Eating disorders affect not only the individual but also the entire family system. At The Surrey Centre for Eating Disorders, we recognise the profound impact these conditions can have on loved ones. Our Family Education & Support Programme is designed to provide families with the understanding, tools, and support needed to navigate the complexities of eating disorders together.

We understand that each family’s experience is unique. Our programme offers both full-day and half-day sessions, tailored to meet your specific needs. Whether you’re seeking to comprehend the emotional underpinnings of an eating disorder, require practical dietary guidance, or a combination of both, our team is here to support you.
An initial family assessment helps us customise the programme to address your concerns effectively. Sessions are facilitated by both a dietitian and a counsellor, ensuring a comprehensive approach to care

Our Family Education & Support Programme encompasses:
- Family Assessment: Understanding your family’s dynamics and specific needs.
- Dietetics and Nutritional Support: Providing practical advice on meal planning and nutrition.
- Family Counselling: Exploring emotional responses and fostering healthy communication.
- Education on Eating Disorders: Gaining insights into the nature and impact of eating disorders.
- Meal Planning – Theory and Practice: Developing strategies for supportive meal times.
- One-on-One Counselling: Offering individual support as needed.
- Treatment Planning: Collaborating on a cohesive approach to recovery

Our full-day programme runs from 9am to 5pm, and our half-day sessions are arranged to suit your family’s needs and availability.
Families are invited to bring lunch to share, offering a lived moment of connection and nourishment within a safe, supported setting. Private, quiet spaces are available throughout the day for one-to-one conversations or rest, and refreshments are provided.
We aim to create a space that feels held, considered, and grounded—where learning and reconnection can unfold gently.

Families often seek answers to:
- What is an eating disorder?
- Why has my loved one developed an eating disorder?
- How can I support other family members?
- What steps should I take around meal times?
- Why am I feeling so angry and frightened?
Our programme is designed to address these questions, providing clarity and support as you navigate this journey together.

We understand how disorienting and painful it can be to watch someone you love struggle with an eating disorder. This programme is not about fixing or rushing, but about coming alongside – with understanding, with steadiness, and with the tools to support both your loved one and yourselves. You are not alone in this. We are here to walk with you, at every stage of the journey.
