FAMILY EDUCATION AND SUPPORT PROGRAMME

We understand that it is not only the individual with an eating disorder that needs support and that, often, a wider impact is felt by the whole family. We have often been asked by family members if we can help them understand their own feelings surrounding the eating disorder as well as offering some practical advice and resources. To this end, we have put together a Family Education Programme offering a range of practical, dietetic help and advice alongside counselling and emotional support.

The Family Education Programme is available as a full day or half day programme. It is designed to support your own family needs and whilst some families may be looking for help understanding their own reactions surrounding the eating disorder, others may wish for more practical, dietetic help to assist them with meal planning and basic nutritional tips. Alternatively, it may be that a mixture of all these elements is best and in that case, the full day programme is a good place to start. The key is that whether you choose the full day or half day programme, our advice and support is relevant and tailored to your needs. To ensure this can be done, whichever route you ultimately select, we would undertake an initial family assessment to provide you with the correct resources and input.

THE CORE SUBJECT AREAS OF THE FAMILY EDUCATION & SUPPORT PROGRAMME ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  • Family Assessment
  • Dietetics and Nutritional Support
  • Family Counselling
  • Education around Eating Disorders
  • Meal Planning – theory, hints and tips
  • One-on-one counseling
  • Meal Planning – practical
  • Treatment plan

All sessions will have both a dietitian and a counsellor available, where appropriate and/or required.

The day programme runs from 9am-5pm. We would ask you to bring lunch to share. This will help us to understand what you might need as part of practical meal planning section. Break out rooms are available for individual counseling throughout the day as and when required and refreshments are available throughout the day.

QUESTIONS FAMILY MEMBERS CONSISTENTLY ASK:

  • What is an eating disorder?
  • Why has my loved one got an eating disorder?
  • How do I help other family members around their eating disorder?
  • What steps do I take around meal times?
  • Why am I feeling so angry and frightened?
